How to Prepare Your Child for Their First Overnight Adventure

Sending your child to overnight camp for the first time is exciting—and a little nerve-wracking. You’re proud of their growing independence, but it’s natural to wonder how they’ll adjust.

At AstroCamp, we know this milestone matters. Here are a few ways parents can help kids (and themselves) feel confident, calm, and ready for an unforgettable summer adventure.

1. Start Talking About Camp Early

The earlier you talk about camp, the more time your child has to build excitement and confidence. Look through photos and videos together, explore the AstroCamp website, or read the camp schedule so they can imagine what’s ahead.

Discuss what a day might look like—activities, meals, friends, and bedtime. Knowing what to expect turns nerves into excitement.

2. Involve Your Child in Packing

Let your camper help pick out clothes, gear, and even their favorite pajamas. When kids pack their own bag (with guidance!), they feel a sense of ownership and independence.

It also helps them know what’s in their luggage—so they don’t come home wondering where their socks went!

3. Practice Independence at Home

Before camp begins, give your child small chances to practice self-care: making their bed, showering, or organizing their things. These simple steps build confidence and make the transition to camp life smoother.

You can also plan an overnight with family or friends to get them comfortable spending a night away from home.

4. Talk About Feelings—Without Fear

Let your child know it’s okay to feel nervous or miss home. Reassure them that counselors are there to help, and that many campers feel the same way at first.

Focus on the fun, friendships, and adventures ahead. Remind them that courage doesn’t mean not feeling scared—it means trying something new anyway.

5. Send Encouragement (and a Little Love)

A short letter or note tucked into their bag is a wonderful surprise for the first few days at camp. Keep it upbeat—focus on how proud you are and how excited you are to hear their stories.

At AstroCamp, campers can also receive letters and emails from home, giving everyone a small connection while still letting kids embrace their independence.

6. Trust the Process

The first overnight camp experience is a big step—but it’s one filled with growth, confidence, and joy. Kids return from AstroCamp taller (in more ways than one), braver, and full of stories about their new discoveries and friends.
